Wasini Island is located off the southern Indian Ocean coast of Kenya. It is a marine life lover’s heaven, boasting an abundance of unspoilt coral reefs which offer a unique opportunity for spotting dolphins, turtles, tropical fish and whale sharks. The Island itself hosts a rare variety of plants and birds which are furthermore able to thrive in their tranquil habitat because there are no cars or roads! The reefs are home to arguably the best diving sites in the world and this area is a popular spot for the sports fishermen to begin their journeys.
Wasini Island is well known for deep sea fishing and the beautiful coral reefs that surround it’s island. It has over thirteen good diving spots close by and is also a short distance away from Pemba Island and Tanga for an even more far-reaching choice for diving or fishing.
The surrounding area, to the Tanzanian border, consists of traditional fishing villages & also very interesting large caves slightly inland as well as at Shimoni. There is no resort development & the area has retained its traditional charm.
Shimoni has been designated by the Museums of Kenya a National Heritage sight – they are renovating historical points of interest in the village.
For those who may wish to develop a dive base, up-market ‘Swahili Village’, hotel, cottages, improvement on business opportunities, we have some great suggestions.
The Wasini Channel has deep water anchorage available for medium sized visiting cruise ships. Located well within the channel it can offer a good harbor for luxury motor or sailing yachts.
Wasini Island is accessed off the main Mombasa-Tanzania road and a few kilometres down a well maintained dirt track through lush green coastal rain forest and friendly Swahili villages.
